Parmesan-Crusted Au Gratin Potatoes and Onion Recipe
This recipe for potatoes and onions mixed with a creamy cheese sauce and baked with a crispy cheese topping is a terrific side dish.
I took this recipe to a potluck and everyone kept raving about how amazing it was. My friend who is a food critic and restaurant owner went on and on about delicious it was. I did add/change a few things. I added some bacon under the onions as well as on top, on the advice of another reviewer. I also added some more cheddar and asiago cheese on top under the crackers and shaved Parmesan cheese. Also the group I was taking the dish to are all big fans of garlic so I minced up a garlic clove and sautéed for a minute in the butter before I added the flour. All the flavors blended perfectly! This will be my go to potluck dish from now on!
Looking for the best recipe was hard, so many to choose from, but I am very pleased with this one. I made my first dish Christmas 2015 and it was a big hit with my entire family. It will now be a big part of our traditional Christmas dinner. But the second time I did it was even better ! (What confidence can do), I sautéed the sliced onions, added more cream and bacon topping. This recipe will sure be handed down to my children and families.
Great recipe! The cheese combo is intense and the onions make a big difference. We used sharp white cheddar and some Swiss in place of the mild cheddar. We also had to thin the sauce a little, but no biggie. Low reviewers must not have adjusted seasonings with salt. These are the most flavorful scalloped potatoes I've ever had and will serve them on holidays.
Delicious, loved it. Used red potatoes, that’s what I had, halved the recipe. Still lots of leftovers. Biggest change I made was to add some chopped garlic to the melted butter, before adding the flour. We love garlic. I didn’t boil the potatoes either. I sliced them then mixed them with chopped onions, put them in a large bowl and microwaved for 3-4 minutes, twice. Once they were softened, I poured the cheese sauce over and mixed, before putting in the casserole dish. Yummy! Thank you!
These were as good as anything I've had at Fleming's, Ruth Chris or Morton's. This recipe is a keeper for sure!
This was perfect alongside the ham I made. Kids loved it and easy to follow. I had to substitute the cheese because I had what I had. I used Romano cheese & shredded mozzarella cheese instead of Cheddar & Asiago
